Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman stated that artificial intelligence is expected to transform various roles rather than eliminating them from the workforce. According to reporting from Business Insider, Garman pushed back against concerns of a widespread "wipe-out" of white-collar positions, suggesting instead that while approximately half of such jobs may change, they will not disappear.
Garman compared the current shift in technology to the historical introduction of spreadsheet software. The Times of India reported that he argued fears regarding massive job losses are economically unsound, noting that new technologies typically alter how work is performed rather than removing the need for human labor.
Despite a period of company-wide layoffs driven by gains in efficiency from AI, Garman highlighted a strategic push to hire 11,000 interns. He emphasized the importance of recruiting younger talent for their adaptability and fresh perspectives. This initiative aims to build a workforce capable of navigating evolving technological demands while maintaining organizational growth.
