House Representative Tim Burchett, a Republican from Tennessee, has suggested that officials allow the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to develop into an ecosystem rather than attempting to eliminate algae growth. This proposal follows reports of algae appearing in the water shortly after renovation work on the basin was completed.
The Independent reported that the algae turned the pool's water green just days after construction finished. The presence of the vegetation has been noted as a development occurring immediately following the completion of work on the basin.
According to The Hill, Rep. Burchett suggested that officials "let it go" and create an environment with fish and other components. He described this approach as a way to manage the current conditions of the pool rather than continuing standard maintenance efforts to clear the water.
