Keir Starmer announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party on Monday morning. Following the announcement, reporting from The Mirror indicates that Andy Burnham is positioned to succeed him and become prime minister by mid-July.
The Mirror reported that while Starmer’s tenure included significant political engagement, certain aspects of his track record were described as being affected by errors. According to The Independent, several members of parliament and ministers are backing Burnham as the successor in the leadership role.
Burnham is expected to return to the House of Commons shortly. The Independent reports that he may be able to run for the party leadership uncontested upon his return. If successful in that bid, he will succeed Starmer as prime minister during a transition period scheduled for mid-July.
