The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal intends to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill during the current legislative session. This initiative aligns with a core commitment made by the party in its election manifesto for the state.
According to reports from NDTV, the state government may table the UCC as the first piece of legislation on Monday. The BJP currently holds 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, providing it with a majority to move the bill through the house. This legislative push follows the transition from the previous administration.
The introduction of the bill represents a shift from the policy held by the preceding Trinamool Congress government. During that period, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had publicly opposed the implementation of a uniform civil code and pledged not to adopt such measures in West Bengal. As the first BJP-led government in the region, the current administration is moving forward with one of its primary campaign promises.
