NASA Perseverance rover detects complex organic carbon in Martian mudstone

The Perseverance rover has detected complex organic carbon within ancient mudstones in the Jezero crater on Mars. The measurement was conducted by the Sherloc instrument and occurred at a site known as the Bright Angel outcrop. According to reports from the Indian Express and New Scientist, this location is part of a dried up river system that transported water into the crater billions of years ago.

The specific type of carbon identified in these samples is known as macromolecular carbon, or MMC. While the presence of such compounds can be caused by geological processes, they are also associated with organic matter from living organisms. The identification of these complex carbons provides a data point for researchers investigating the history of the Martian environment.

Additional findings reported by New Scientist and Slashdot include the observation of unusual patterns on the surface of rocks in the same area. These textures have been described as resembling traces left by microbial activity. Because the Jezero crater is a primary site for searching for signs of past habitability, these observations provide further evidence to analyze regarding the planet's history.
